How to Make Tinctures

Making tinctures are a great addition to the natural first aid kit and are easy to make!

How to Make Tinctures

What you will need:

  • A mason jar
  • Chosen herb(s)
  • Alcohol-Vodka 80-90 proof
  1. Fill the jar up with ½-¾ with fresh or dried herbs. If using fresh herbs, chop them up to help release the juices.
  2. Fill the jar up with alcohol, enough so that it covers the herbs.
  3. Shake the jar. Herbs should be able to move freely.
  4. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place for 4-8 weeks.
  5. Shake a couple times per week and make sure there is always alcohol covering the herbs.

After 4-8 weeks…

What you will need:

  • Cheesecloth
  • Bowl or cup
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Amber Bottle with Dropper
  1. Strain herbs through cheesecloth into a bowl or cup.
  2. Poor into amber or blue jar. This is where a funnel will come in handy.
  3. Label and store in a cool dark place. Should keep for a couple of years.

Fresh Leaves and Flowers: Fill 2/3-3/4 jar
Fresh Roots, Barks, and Berries: Fill 1/3-1/2 jar

Dried Leaves and Flowers: Fill 1/2-3/4 jar
Dried Roots, Barks, and Berries: Fill 1/4-3/4 jar (roots and berries will expand)

80-90 Proof Vodka: Standard for tinctures, good for most dried herbs
½ 80 Proof Vodka + ½ 190 Proof Grain Alcohol: Best for fresh high-moisture herbs
190 Proof Grain Alcohol: Used for dissolving gums and resins, very high strength tincture, not easily taken.
